At BIC Araba, we continue to support initiatives that help build a more sustainable, healthier, and more innovative environment for the people and companies that are part of our ecosystem.
Coinciding with the recent opening of the new cycle path connecting Gamarra with the Álava Technology Park, we have launched a new electric bicycle loan service for the companies located in our building.
The initiative has a dual objective: to provide a comfortable and sustainable alternative for daily commuting while also giving a second life to existing resources through a model aligned with the principles of the circular economy.
A project based on reuse and innovation
The project has been developed together with 2cyBikes, an Álava-based company specialised in sustainable mobility and the refurbishment of electric bicycles.
To make this possible, 12 folding bicycles previously owned by BIC Araba have been recovered and transformed. Although the bicycles were still in good condition, their original features did not provide a practical enough solution for daily commuting between Vitoria-Gasteiz and the Technology Park, so they had remained unused.
2cyBikes carried out a complete electrification and refurbishment process, adapting an electric assistance system specifically designed for compact folding bicycles. One of the project’s main technical challenges was integrating the electric technology while maintaining the right balance between autonomy, weight, and manoeuvrability, ensuring the bicycles remained lightweight and practical for everyday use.
A second life for more sustainable mobility
Beyond the technical transformation, the project reflects the circular economy philosophy shared by both BIC Araba and 2cyBikes.
The company’s name itself summarises this vision. “2cy”, pronounced like the Basque word “bizi”, connects with terms such as “bizikleta” (bicycle) and especially “bizi berria” (new life). At the same time, it also refers to “2nd Cycle” in English.
This dual meaning perfectly reflects their philosophy: recovering, transforming, and putting bicycles and components back into circulation, giving them a new opportunity for continued use.
Because sustainable mobility is not only about manufacturing new electric vehicles, but also about reusing existing resources, refurbishing them, and extending their useful life.
Innovation and circular economy applied to micromobility
The collaboration between BIC Araba and 2cyBikes is also linked to the 2cyBATT project, an initiative mentored by BIC Araba focused on developing second-life energy storage solutions applied to micromobility.
Although both projects are different, they share the same vision: promoting a more efficient, sustainable, and circular mobility model, where reuse and the optimisation of existing resources play a key role.
Because, very often, the most sustainable bicycle is not a brand-new one, but a recovered, transformed bicycle that is ready for a second life.
